The South Mountain Glades are a bit of a locals secret. Found in the south group of the La Sal Mountains near La Sal Pass, the glades are located on Point 11142, a small, wooded peak just southeast of South Mountain. Several meadows spill down from the top, so many in fact that, when viewed from a distance, the mountain looks almost like a ski resort with cut runs. These open spaces offer long vertical on protected aspects within evergreen forests that shelter powder snow for weeks after a storm. Also, the South Mountain area gets more snow than the rest of the range, making this Moab’s own powder paradise. Unfortunately, La Sal Pass Road isn’t plowed, so the approach from the trailhead is long. The upside is that practically no one skis here, so you can have the place all to yourself.
