Powder-filled mountainsides, tree skiing, tremendous views, and relatively easy access—Picnic Canyon has everything you could want in a backcountry tour. Plus, there’s a sweet public cabin below the best ski terrain where you can have lunch, escape nasty weather, or even stay the night. The prize line is a 1200-foot northwest face called Cabin Run, where you’ll want to farm powder all day. As is always the case with the Oquirrh Mountains, private property is everywhere, so obey all NO TRESPASSING signs. At the end of Ophir Canyon Road, find the trailhead by immediately crossing the creek. The start is marked by a NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES sign. At this point, the trail crosses through private property, so stay on the designated trail.
