Scotties Bowl is a classic descent in Little Cottonwood Canyon, just to the west of
Snowbird’s resort boundary. It’s a great tour, much like a five-star rock climb with a
hand crack that leads to a face climb that leads to laybacks, stemming, and friction
moves. Scotties has variety like that as it starts with a really steep, treed slope, funnels into fast, low-angle terrain, and features a lot of gullies and shoulders to play on.
Scotties isn’t just about a good, long powder run—it’s also like a natural terrain park. Access to Scotties is very easy from the Bird when the Gad 2 backcountry access gate is open. On those days, Scotties is best avoided if you’re looking for solitude, as it gets tracked out really fast from skiers hungry for a quick sidecountry hit. When the resort gate is closed, it’s a great tour right from the highway with more than 2000 feet of vertical to shred. But the gate is usually closed when avalanche danger is high, so make a careful snow stability assessment before ascending this massive slide path.
