The hike to Rough Rider Falls affords the chance to visit the Rouge River in its infancy. Just a handful of miles from the headwaters of the spring-born river, the falls are forceful and the river is gorgeous. It’s trails like this that make hiking in southern Oregon a joy. Beauty and solitude in large, equal doses are not uncommon in this part of the state. Similar trails would draw throngs elsewhere. But just a stone’s throw away from Crater Lake, Rough Rider Falls sits strong and proud, in relative obscurity. Teddy Roosevelt, the Father of Conservation, would be proud.
