This tour is basically a one-way descent of a mighty glacier, the Nisqually. Generally, it is feasible only in midwinter, when heavy snowfall has covered the crevasses on the lower glacier and smoothed the rubble fields below the glacier’s snout. A good overview of the lower route is possible from Canyon Rim Viewpoint. The exit and pickup take place on the Paradise Highway at the bridge that crosses the Nisqually River just east of Nahunta Falls. For this tour, visibility must be good. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; routefinding required; permit / fee area.
