What makes this tour worthwhile is seeing the unbroken sweep of the west faces of Rainier rising from the meadows of Sunset Park in evening light. The slopes in this area vary from minor to heroic. The approach is Homerian, thanks to the West Side Road closure. Difficulties: Moderate avalanche; routefinding required; bike ride; permit / fee area. This tour is 7 miles long but the approach is 15 miles one way by mountain bike.
