This is the ultimate midsummer tour for skiers and snowboarders alike. A brief trail approach through forest launches the climber onto snow-covered ridges and meadows that terminate at the top of a steep headwall at 10,000 feet. The most delightful aspect of this tour is that the top 3,000 feet of the downhill run are plainly visible from Seattle, so that the memory of this tour is refreshed whenever Mount Rainier is not obscured by clouds. Difficulties: Moderate avalanche potential; glacier travel; routefinding required; permit / fee area.
