This is a marathon view tour, well suited to Nordic skis. A long approach up a glacier-fed river valley and a gentle, broad glacier puts the skier right into “The Hall of the Mountain King.” This is a better overnight tour than a day trip; with more time, skiers can approach the north wall of Rainier more closely (but not too closely). Difficulties: High avalanche potential; glacier travel; permit/fee area.
