The Cowlitz Chimneys, a group of prominent rock towers, dominate the skyline east of Mount Rainier when seen from Sunrise. The Chimneys are set among glaciers with 1,000 feet of local relief. This is a challenging tour because of the long approach, but the unique character of this area may interest the adventurous backcountry skier. Ice axes are recommended. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; glacier travel; routefinding required; permit / fee area.
