Close-up views of Bonanza Peak are among the attractions of this multiday tour. This classic ski tour was first done in 1938 via Phelps Creek Basin. Long runs in every direction and a downhill track from Spider Col to the car complete the package. When you return from this tour, you’ll know you’ve been somewhere. Start as for Chiwawa Mountain or Mount Maude. Climb to Spider Col (7,100 feet). Then descend 2.4 miles northeast to Lyman Lake (5,600 feet) and cross to its northern shore. Climb gladed trees 0.9 mile north-northwest to Cloudy Pass (6,500 feet). From here, climb 1 mile northeast along the ridge over Cloudy Peak summit (7,915 feet) and continue 1 mile to the summit of North Star Mountain (8,068 feet). Difficulties: Glacier travel; routefinding required; high avalanche potential; permit / fee area; not recommended for snowboarders.
