Mount Mastiff doesn’t boast the altitude or the skiing of Mount Howard, but is a spectacular objective when approached via the Merritt Lake Trail. The return run offers great tree skiing in mid-and late winter. This is a long tour and makes an excellent overnight trip. One way to gauge the safety of this trip: if skiing in the trees is nice, the snow higher up is dangerous. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; routefinding required; permit/fee area.
