This tour has year-round access because Cascade River Road is below the snow line. However, this makes for a punishing approach, in terms of elevation gain. Once in high country, the long runs and west-slope views of the North Cascades make the climb worthwhile. Small snowshoes can make the steep approach easier. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; routefinding required; permit / fee area.
