This tour inserts the skier into the rolling mountains of the Pasayten Wilderness, which can provide insulation from storms that may be dumping on more westerly areas. Slate Peak sports the highest unpaved road in Washington State. When road conditions permit, you can drive to the Slate Peak parking lot, step out of your car, step into your bindings, and carve 1,000 feet of north-facing turns, just for starters. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; permit/fee area.
