After a modest climb to the ridge crest, this route lets snowshoers stay high and enjoy an endless bounty of beautiful views and remarkable scenery. The trail rolls south to north and opens up on views of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness peaks, Cle Elum Lake, and the entire eastern Cascade Mountains. At the northern end of Rampart Ridge is the bulky summit of Alta Mountain; directly opposite is the vertical face of Kendall Peak. The steep walls of these mountains seem to rise from the ground at your feet. Continue to press on up the valley, but only if you know how to evaluate avalanche dangers.
