It doesn’t happen often, but when bustling Castle Creek’s boulders become billowy snow pillows, a snowshoer is in for a special treat. Here’s a wild yet peaceful route far from the hurried crowds, with a good chance you can have it all to yourself. Long gone are the chugging logging trucks that roar around the numerous bends of Castle Creek Road, your route when it’s snow covered. Call ahead for snow conditions. This little-known snowshoe and cross-country ski journey is loaded with refreshing creekside scenery and wonderful views of snowy Flume Creek Ridge and Grey Rocks. Watch closely for photo opportunities, including Castle Creek with the snow white and steep granite of Grey Rocks as an ideal backdrop. By occasionally glancing behind you or waiting for the return trip, there are plenty of views of Castle Crags from this rare vantage point to the west.
