The 10,000-square-foot log lodge, built in 1999 by the Charles and Eran Severn family, seems like it’s on top of the world. This wilderness retreat hosts up to twenty guests in seven guest rooms and one cabin. The family-run operation devotes its entire 580 acres to the guest-ranching business. In summer, there’s hiking, biking, Yellowstone trips, horseback riding, fly fishing, rafting, golfing, and swimming. By winter, the lodge feels snowed in, yet is only a twenty-minute, 12-mile drive from the town of Big Sky. Day skiers should plan on staying for dinner in the elegant dining room (reservations necessary) for hearty Montana fare, such as elk medallions, bison, and prime rib. The ski and snowshoe trails were designed with beginners and lessons in mind on the Big EZ Loop, and for seasoned skiers on the more challenging Mountain Meadows Loop and Grizzly Getaway. Surface quality: Groomed single track, skate lane, and snowshoe trails.
