Romantic legend has it that Going to the Sun Mountain, and later the road, is named for a mystic Indian who ascended the 9,642-foot peak to join the sun in eternity. The road, 52 miles long, closes in the fall and reopens usually in June. From the parking area, the gentle 4-mile route to the Avalanche Campground offers easy skiing and good views of McDonald Creek.
The forest of cedar and hemlock is surrounded by 8,000-foot mountains. Along the way are several photography opportunities of mountains and McDonald Creek. Sacred Dancing Cascade is on the creek, 1 mile into the trail. Note that moose frequent the Going to the Sun trail in winter. The best advice is to keep a good distance between skier and moose and never approach these unpredictable animals. Surface quality: Skier-tracked.
