Dedicated Nordic skiers and shoers that have joined together to form the Gunnison Nordic Club have turned the Gunnison area into a mecca for those looking for a variety of easy to advanced backcountry trails and adventures. Started back in 2004, and managing and grooming a host of trail adventures throughout the Gunnison area, this not-for-profit club is dedicated to making the region an outstanding experience for all skinny skiing and snowshoeing locals and visitors, all at no charge. Mill Creek, located less than 16 miles north of the city of Gunnison, offers some excellent ski touring and scenic views that are unsurpassed. The trail starts at the edge of the parking area, and immediately visitors are awed by the distant backdrop known as the “Castles” that are found in the West Elk Wilderness Area. These unbelievable mountain formations actually look like majestic medieval castles and fortresses, rising in the distance to vertical heights in excess of 13,000-plus feet.
