lf you’re looking for a good day hike that really delivers in terms of scenery, summits, and a solid workout, you won’t do better than this Pioneer Valley favorite. In the summer, Mount Toby State Reservation, owned by the University of Massachusetts, is fringed with forty-plus varieties of ferns and dazzling orchids. Wintertime offers less color but more solitude, with rewarding views of distant peaks and the Connecticut River Valley in shades of white and blue. This hike includes a portion of the Robert Frost Trail, begun in 1982 as a way to link Amherst conservation properties. More than 40 miles long, the Robert Frost Trail takes in some pretty country, including the 1000-acre Lawrence Swamp.
