Bring the kids, bring the dog, bring Grandma . . . This fun, family-friendly center is a great place to spend a day, offering snowshoe-only paths, cross-country ski trails, a children’s play area, warming shelters, a groomed dog trail, a downhill practice area, and instruction. A full-service ski shop, outdoor seating area, and restaurant are also on-site. Just up the street is the popular Sunday River Ski Resort (no affiliation with the cross-country center). On Friday evenings, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, there are guided snowshoe hikes, ending with a marshmallow roast over an open bonfire. On Thursday and Saturday evenings, the center offers a guided hike to a prime hillside spot to view the fireworks at the Sunday River Ski Resort.
There are gentle, short walks around streams and brooks and through pine and hardwood forests. Or you can take a hike (alongside a downhill ski trail) to the Summit Hotel and Moonstruck Cafe. Looking for something more challenging to get the heart rate up? You’ll find it here, too, along the Raven Ridge Trail, which climbs steeply to open cliffs. You can also access the Locke Mountain Trail from here, an unmarked backcountry trail leading to the open 1924-foot mountain summit.
