Acadia National Park is where mountains, lakes, and the sea come together on heart-shaped Mount Desert Island. A short bridge connects the island to the mainland. Seventeen mountains are on the island, ranging in elevation from 200 to 1,530 feet, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club’s hiking bible, the AMC Maine Mountain Guide. Though the island’s hiking trails can be somewhat hilly and downright vertical (the ladders on the Precipice and Beehive Trails come to mind), it can also be smooth. That’s where the carriage roads around Witch Hole Pond come in to play. Surface quality: Skier tracked though groomed by volunteers at times.
