Mount Kineo could be the most distinctive landmark on the largest lake in the Northeast—Moosehead Lake. From the wooded summit of the nearly 1,800-foot peak, one can climb an observation tower and see the kingdom of Moosehead and beyond. The panorama from the deck above the pines is striking. There are miles of coves and inlets below. The frozen lake is more like a vast tundra. The lake can be abuzz with activity in one direction, while nary a soul can be seen in another. Mountains and trees dominate the landscape. The snow forms a checkerboard pattern on the lake. The hum of snowmobiles can be heard amidst the quiet. Mount Kineo is a monolith that rises some 800 feet above the lake. The mountain is on a peninsula that begins on the eastern shore and comes within a mile or so of the western shore. Surface quality: Snowmobile packed.
