The Birches is off the beaten path, on the edge of Maine’s vast wilderness. The 30 miles of groomed trails over the mostly wooded terrain offer the ever-changing forest as a backdrop. Owned by brothers Bill Willard and John Willard, a University of Maine graduate who studied forestry, the resort encompasses 11,000 acres of wildlands on the shores of Moosehead and Brassua Lakes. The rocky monolith called Mount Kineo sits off Moosehead’s frozen shore and is quite the sight from a table at the wooded lodge. Throw in miles of local snowmobile trails and the solid lake, and it seems the choices of where to ski or snowshoe are limitless. Surface quality: Skate and track set.
