Moose in the roads and moose mounted on walls are intertwined with the rugged and brawny character of Rangeley. This western Maine community is the gateway to winter recreation. Though snowmobilers are the dominant force on the trails, skiers and snowshoers can find trail systems to play on as well. Some 15 miles of groomed trails are located at the base of the Saddleback Ski Area, about 7 miles from town. But down in Rangeley, the mushrooming volunteerism of a core of about thirty diehard cross-country skiers has led to the development of some 15 miles of trails called Rangeley Municipal Trails. As snowmobling grew in the area, skiers began looking for their own trails to ski.
