Skiers and snowshoers looking for a 10-mile network of challenging trails in southern Vermont should head to the rural village of Landgrove and the Mountain Valley Trails Association area in the Green Mountain National Forest. The farms, brooks, horses, old cemeteries, and New England quaintness are a most pleasant diversion from the intermediate and advanced trails on the surrounding hills. Located in the national forest, the trails are ungroomed and open to the public at no charge. (There are a few loop options available, like the 7.0-mile Little Michigan Loop.) They are well marked with blue diamonds and signs. Here, we go a little more than half that distance in a hill-side workout that also encompasses Vermont’s legendary Catamount Cross-Country Ski Trail. Surface quality: Ungroomed, skier tracked.

I wouldn't consider the Little Michigan Trail well marked, I had trouble following the far end of the loop in October. Of course, in winter you can always follow your own tracks home!
