The Mountain Top Inn gets high ratings from the cross-country community for its plentiful and challenging terrain. But first, let’s get something straight: This isn’t golf course skiing. If flat is what you want, go elsewhere. However, if looking down on the Chittendon Reservoir after making a long haul through a forever-changing forest is your idea of fun, then Mountain Top is the right place. The reservoir is at 1,495 feet while the mountaintop stands at 2,174 feet. Skiers and snowshoers are welcome on the more than 50 miles of groomed trails of the 1,000-acre resort that abuts private lands and Green Mountain National Forest. At more than 2,000 feet in elevation, the resort operates from December to mid-March, attracting area race teams and experienced Nordic skiers. Surface quality: Tracked, skate groomed.
