Here is another northern Michigan downhill ski area that, unbeknownst to a lot of Nordic skiers, has a collection of trails that are among the best places to learn and grow in your abilities. Much of Shanty’s trail system, in fact, is used in the annual White Pine Stampede race the Saturday of the first full weekend in February. There are no trails most-difficult-rated on the system, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some beautiful and challenging skiing to be had here. What Shanty lacks in difficulty is more than made up for in its wonderful views and those soft-as-velvet sunsets over incomparable West Michigan hills. Surface quality: Groomed daily.
