If you want a comfortable ski through Michigan’s hardwood hills outside the northern Lower Peninsula’s most popular vacation city, here it is. And if you want a tough, no-holds-barred gut-buster, here it is. Take your choice of three loops that will either please you or test your endurance and make you wonder why you didn’t take the shorter route. This is the home of what’s probably the peninsula’s toughest ski race, the Subaru Vasa, which draws pros and amateurs from across North America. Everything is maintained by donation, so be sure to feed the pipe at the parking lot trailhead. Surface quality: Groomed at least four times a week, depending on snow conditions.
