NOTE: THIS TRAIL IS NOW CLOSED! Cool's Cross-Country Farm has been a family enterprise for more than 20 years and is one of the few true destination cross-country-only resorts in Michigan. Begun by Mike Cool, the operation is now carried on by his sons, who also run the 400-acre property as a tree farm. Cool’s main lodge, in fact, was built from more than 16 varieties of wood grown on the property. You may think the ski area is a bit too far south for great conditions, but in reality temperatures here average 5 degrees cooler than along the Lake Michigan lakeshore, and the area is at the southern edge of a West Michigan snowbelt. Even when there’s no snow a few miles away, then, there will be snow on the trails here if the folks at Cool’s tell you there is. A trip here is not only relaxing with plenty of exercise, but educational, too, because of the many informative markers corresponding to points of interest along the trails. Surface quality: Groomed as needed, at least weekly. Trails are groomed with a draft horse.
