Eric Anderson decided that his day job as an engineer at a Detroit-area auto parts company wasn’t as rewarding as a life in the Upper Peninsula woods, and cross-country skiers are the better for his decision. Eric and his father, Dave, spent the last 15 years creating this gem of a ski area out of 400 acres of woodlands bordering the Montreal River, which flows north and south between Michigan and Wisconsin near this westernmost city of the Upper Peninsula. Following natural contours, ABR—short for Active Backwoods Retreat—is one of the best reasons to head here to ski. It also has the advantage of having great lake-effect snowfalls in the early season. The result is great early conditions that stay great well into April. Up to 250 inches of snow each year is pretty normal. Surface quality: Groomed, track set, and packed for skating daily or as needed.
