The upper peninsula is wilderness central for Michigan, and you’re in the heart of that capital when you step into your skis here. Within the park’s 58,000 acres is one of the largest expanses of virgin northern hemlock west of the Adirondack Mountains, and the highest mountain range in the Midwest. It’s about as close to a mountain experience as most midwesterners will find in winter. The drive here may be long, but the rewards are many. And because of the interpretive activities taking place all winter, it’s one of the state’s most skier- and snowshoer-friendly parks. Surface quality: All trails are power-tilled and double track set, with some skating trails.
