Parfrey’s Glen is one of the loveliest, most intimate little spots in Wisconsin. Though the inner gorge is only about 0.25-mile long, it holds enough fascination to permanently etch itself in your memory. This trek will take you deeper and deeper into an ever narrowing gorge, where each twist and turn reveal another beautiful scene. The glen was once a place only a few people knew about by word of mouth. The 0.5-mile hike from the parking area helps keep the crowds down, but your best chance for the old experience of unfolding wonder is to visit in winter. As you travel through the gorge, you may see reedlike segmented plants pushing up through the snow. This is scouring rush, an ancient type that predates leafy, flowering plants. Surface quality: Ungroomed, hiker and snowshoer packed. Fees: yes.
