There is something nice about a ski trail that starts out running downhill. Especially when it’s gradual enough for an exhilarating warm-up, which is needed to handle the long 180-foot climb on the backside. Willow Springs loop is just such a perfect trail. Blue Mound owes its preeminence as one of the state’s highest spots to a capstone of Niagara dolomite, the same layer of rock Niagara Falls tumbles over. All other remnants of the sedimentary limestone eroded all the way back to eastern Wisconsin. This gift of nature has left a cone-shaped hill and a wonderful place to ski. Surface quality: Groomed, single tracked, skate lane. Fees: yes.
