The Iron Mountain Trail is a 2.0-mile, out-and-back jaunt that boasts 971 feet of climbing and is perfect for an early morning or late afternoon pickme-up workout. The run can also be part of a longer outing on the connecting Intemann Trail (memorializing Paul Intemann, a Manitou Springs city planner who died in a car crash in 1986), which runs about 5 miles from Red Rock Canyon Open Space, located on the outskirts of Colorado Springs, west to Manitou Springs. From the starting point at Memorial Park, head west on Manitou Avenue to Pawnee Street, and then head south, where the road becomes rather steep. Follow to the fork at Midland Avenue, and continue on up Pawnee, where a sign indicates a dead end. Climb less than 0.25 mile and the trailhead is on the east side of the street.
