This area boasts over 1,300 acres and 8.5 miles of well-marked trails. With forested sections, open meadows, and ridgetop vistas, this area is varied and diverse. Partners in the Spruce Mountain Open Space include Great Outdoors Colorado, The Conservation Fund, Douglas County, private conservation buyers, United States Department of Agriculture, and Colorado State Forest Service. Start on doubletrack trail for this 5.25-mile loop. Continue to the next trailhead, approximately 0.3 mile, and turn left on the Mountain Top Loop. Follow this singletrack, a smooth-surfaced trail complete with switchbacks and occasional roots and rocks, but nothing technical. Sections of the trail have loose sand to test ankle strength and stability. Enjoy spectacular views of the Greenland Open Space and the Palmer Divide to the north and east, and an occasional glimpse of Pikes Peak poking up in the distance to the southwest.
