This loop can be run either clockwise or counterclockwise; the counterclockwise direction is described here. From the parking area, the Mountain Lion Trail begins with a very short climb that quickly turns into rolling two-track trail traveling through open meadows. After a fun mile that provides wonderful views to the east, the trail descends and curves north, dropping you into the small canyon formed by Deer Creek (mile 1.4). Once in the canyon, the trail travels through dispersed aspen and pine forests as it gently climbs over rocky terrain along the edge of Deer Creek.
