Allegan State Game Area foot trails are a wonderful wildlife viewing opportunity in this 50,000-acre state game area. Allegan is a showcase for oak-pine barrens (also called oak-pine savanna)—a unique community of plants and animals adapted to life on the dry, sandy soils of this area. Allegan also features lowland hardwood and oak-pine forests, wetlands, ponds and open fields. There is not much elevation gain to the trails and most of the trail is under tree cover. Foot trails are marked with yellow paint on the trees.

Good hiking for a couple of days. Lots of exploring. Forest, lake, marsh, mushrooms. Hoping to get a picture of a bald eagle soon. Most of the hikes start at Ely Lake Campground/Park. Some marsh areas extend into the hiking region until June. Then the trails are dry. Although, it is still possible to hike near the marshes in spring if you take small jumps from moss area to moss area. Ely Lake Park Loop is a little over a mile to go around. Lots of side hikes too. Can hike to Little Tom Lake in less than 1/2 hour and can hike or run to Swan Creek which is about 7.3 miles round trip.
