The 5,604 acres of mountain woodlands here were acquired in 1994 as a gift to the state from conservationist Charles A. Smithgall. The park is dedicated to the purpose of protecting existing landscape, maintaining wildlife diversity, providing environmental education, and permitting low-impact recreational activities. The prime resource of the park is a stretch of Dukes Creek that runs through the property. This creek is a fine trout stream managed for catch-and-release angling. Trout fishing using artificial lures with barbless hooks is permitted on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
