A great hike with the kids, this trek begins near the inn at Bear Mountain State Park, follows the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) on the paved path along Hessian Lake, and then goes underneath NY 202 into and through the Trailside Museums & Zoo—the only zoo the A.T. runs through—out to the bridge over the Hudson River. From parking lot 1, follow the path next to the Bear Mountain Inn toward Hessian Lake, and turn right past the inn. You can take any one of several parallel paths along the east side of the lake; they all lead to the same area. Whichever you choose, keep your eyes open for signs pointing to the zoo about midway along the lake. Turn right (east) on the A.T., and follow signs to the zoo past a set of restrooms. Just beyond the restrooms, the path comes to the road, makes a sharp left turn, and descends via a ramp to a paved passage beneath the road.
