A loop around the lake provides access to several excellent places to have a picnic or a long break. The descent for this hike along the Dunn?eld Creek Trail passes through a remarkable hemlock- and rhododendron-?lled gorge carved through the uplifted layers of sandstone and quartzite that form Kittatinny Mountain. Due to its 9.6-mile length, plan on a full day out and a lot of varied scenery. Follow the trail out of the back of the parking lot, passing the sign for the A.T. and the Dunnfield Creek Natural Area. Cross the creek over a footbridge, and begin climbing along the north side of the creek. At 0.4 mile, the blue-blazed Dunnfield Creek Trail diverges to the right, descending to the level of the creek.
