This popular hike follows the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) northbound from US 40 along South Mountain to Annapolis Rock, accessed by a side trail heading west. The Annapolis Rock hike is very popular for several reasons: It is close to Frederick, Maryland; the hiking is pleasant and mostly easy going; there is a campground near the rocks so it sees its share of backpackers; and the view from Annapolis Rock is superb. A longer variation of this hike can be made by continuing along the A.T. for another mile to the side trail to Black Rock, which is also on the west side of the ridge.
