While local day-hikers are familiar with many of the highlights of this trip, few link up the Appalachian Trail (AT) with Catoctin Trail (CT) for a backpacking trip of this level of ambition and grandeur—all within an hour’s drive from the Baltimore–DC metropolitan area. The CT varies from being extremely frequently traveled by day-hikers to rarely being visited in its wilder stretches. Along the way, you’ll reel off one big view of the Maryland Blue Ridge after another. You’ll see Annapolis Rock and Ravens Rock from the AT, and you’ll summit Chimney Rock, Wolf Rock, and Cat Rock. Keep in mind, too, that the hike across Maryland is about 40 miles long; this route will take you very near to the big 5-0.
