Over its 40-mile course, the lovely Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) passes through remarkably varied terrain that includes mature hardwood forests, pine plantations, beautiful water courses like Six Mile Run and Black Moshannon Creek, the high exposed ridge of the front itself, and the swamps of Moss-Hanne Trail in Black Moshannon State Park. A walk along the AFT is also a walk through the history of human exploitation of these forests and subsequent efforts to reclaim the land. Moshannon Creek (sometimes called “Red Mo”) runs red with the iron residue left over from coal mining, and the attentive hiker will find the crumbling ruins of camps and forges along the route.
