Join the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) in a secluded locale near Spivey Gap, at the North Carolina–Tennessee state line. Your southbound track takes you over the headwaters of Big Creek. Hike through an upland cove, passing a wildlife clearing. Rise to the stone outcrop of High Rocks, where an open slab avails extensive views of the surrounding mountains. For hikers trekking the Appalachian Trail in the South, that adds up to a lot of mileage, numerous access points, and many highlights, such as the High Rocks, to visit. This section of the A.T., winding through the Bald Mountains, straddles the Tennessee–North Carolina state line. The A.T. crosses US 19W here, creating a convenient access, and avails hikers a nice walk to a big gray outcrop complete with a vista that offers solitude unseen at many other A.T. overlooks.
