Diverse terrain and a network of trails mark this dash up to one of the Missoula Valley’s high points. The hike starts in the confines of Pattee Canyon. Creek bottom yields to hillside, culminating in a ridgeline approach to the mountain. It’s adorned with beacons and lies 650 feet higher than, and east of, Mount Sentinel. While this developed locale may technically be the highest point along the ridge above Hellgate Canyon, the undeveloped no-name 5,709-foot knoll just west of University Mountain is also a fine place to enjoy the heights before turning around. The views offer a unique perspective of the valley and its surrounding mountains. Wildflowers dominate in the spring. A few steep pitches on this hike get your attention but are worth the extra effort.
