The Backbone Trail is the steepest route up Mount Jumbo. It leads from the saddle to the summit on the forested north ridge. As you make your way up this route, you are following the hoofprints of the elk migration. Though steep, this is shorter than other Jumbo summit routes. Before you know it, you are standing on the summit perched for a 360-degree view. The views of the Clark Fork flowing through Missoula are especially good. The Backbone Trail ties together the Mount Jumbo Loop and North Loop hikes.
