The hike visits the hills and hollows above the North Fork Little River, using mostly singletrack, natural surface, hiker-only paths traversing pine and oak hills. Parts of the trek visit the North Fork Little River, where you enjoy streamside scenery. Historic sites and interpretive information are interspersed into the trails. Seeing how fast the greater Triangle area was developing, Durham County and Orange County teamed up to create and maintain this regional park and natural area along the banks of the North Fork Little River. The boundary between the two counties roughly splits the park in half. It all started when Orange County was looking for a dumpsite. In scouring the area, government leaders realized that open space to create a landfill—or a park—was becoming increasingly limited by ceaseless development of former farm-lands and forests.
