This circuit hike leaves a busy trailhead then drops to a breached mill and scenic locale on Crabtree Creek. Beyond this popular spot the trek climbs a ridge then drops to visit Sycamore Creek before eventually returning to travel alongside Crabtree Creek again. The ample hills, alluring creeks, and tributary drainages all draped in woods keep beauty on the front burner the entire hike.
The Company Mill Trail starts at the Reedy Creek entrance to William B. Umstead State Park, conveniently located off I-40. Being an attention-grabbing trail with a combination of aquatic and upland habitats, as well as having local historical significance, makes it a popular trail. However, many of the hikers who start the Company Mill Trail hike only the mile to the former Company Mill site on Crabtree Creek, and enjoy their time at this breached dam, rapids, pool, and rocks, rather than doing the entire circuit hike.
