This loop combines one of the most scenic hiker-only paths in William B. Umstead State Park with a multiple-use trail to explore the south part of the park. First, pass a historic cemetery then drop to bottoms along Reedy Creek and a tributary stream before wandering hills and hollows to meet the multiuse trail. It takes you on high ridges then down to Reedy Creek Lake, a pretty impoundment. Finally, return to the trailhead using another multiuse trail and a quiet park road. William B. Umstead State Park has an extensive trail network. Some trails are hiker only and make multiple loops. Still other trails are multiuse and are open to bicyclers and equestrians. The Loblolly Trail, the main path on this hike, is a hiker-only track, but as an out-and-back path, it does not make a loop. However, also using the Reedy Creek Multiuse Trail, hikers can create a rewarding loop that visits not only moving streams but also still waters, not only narrow singletrack footpath where you watch your every step, but also wider foot-friendly trail that allows you to focus more on the surroundings instead of each footfall.
