Third Mountain is a rocky knob near the center of the Barren-Chairback Range. The Third Mountain Trail climbs gently from the hardwood valley to the rocky evergreen ridge. Once on the ridge it’s a short hike northbound on the Appalachian Trail (AT) to Third Mountain’s summit with fine views north and west. On the return hike, take time to explore the sphagnum bog south of the AT on the trail toward Indian Pond.
